Dreamscheme secures funding for 2019

Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery’s Awards for All programme the Dreamscheme project will continue into its 6th year.

The Dreamscheme project run by Hesters Way Partnership works with young people aged 8-11 in West Cheltenham. Children are referred by 2 local primary schools in Hester’s Way and Rowanfield.

Through the scheme we intend to improve the children’s goals and widen their experiences by focusing on their strengths, encouraging a pride in their community and rewarding positive change.

The project has been running since 2013 and was supported for the first time by Awards for All last year. Originally, through discussions with the schools we recognised that some children would benefit from regular sessions to address their needs and to support them in ways that might not otherwise be available.

We have devised a project which is run and managed by a local mum, Jacquie, who is also a teaching assistant (TA) at Hesters Way Primary school and leader of the local Boys Brigade. She has gathered a team, including another local mum, Rachel also a TA, and Andrew a local dad, whose skills combine well together.

Dreamscheme project will provide 30 weekly after school sessions over a school year for up to 12 children per term selected by the participating schools. The intensive activities sessions will address issues of self-esteem, pride in the local area, teamwork and confidence through a variety of topics selected by the team in collaboration with the children.

The aim throughout these sessions and activities is to ensure that the participants are welcomed, given confidence to share their emotional experiences and feelings to help them in their everyday life. The project offers ways to help them to cope with these circumstances and to make better choices for themselves and to prepare for the transition to secondary school.
